Will I be safe?
You will be responsible for assisting the teacher as a "Duty Parent" one to two times per month. Since the preschool only employs the teacher, parent helpers provide a way of assisting with the operations of the school, such as bookkeeping, fundraising, laundry, publicity. Most jobs require less than 1 hour per week. In addition to this job, you will also be required to attend a monthly parent education seminar and general meeting held the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm.
What is a duty day like?
Generally, duty parents attend the preschool with their child and assist the teacher by setting up before class, assisting & monitoring the kids in the classroom/playground/gym, and cleaning up afterwards. This is a special time for you and your child - most parents find their duty day to be an exciting opportunity to learn about their child, their child's friends, and to help build a sense of community with the teacher and other parents.
What if I can't do my duty day?
Parents are able to decide their duty days one month in advance to accommodate their own schedules, and are also permitted to "switch" days with another parent. Duty days can also be covered by a grandparent, Nanny, or other caregiver. However, licensing requires that one parent attend the monthly parent meetings, even if they don't do the duty days. One parent is also required to complete the 10-hour Orientation Program (see next question for more details).
If you are unable to make a monthly meeting, you must make up the hours at a later date.
Every Duty Parent must accumulate 10 hours of orientation in order to meet the Board's licensing requirements. Preschool observation days, a meeting with the teacher, attendance at parent ed. sessions and reading the preschool handbook are a few examples of how these hours are quickly earned.
Parent Participation Preschools are licensed to operate on the condition that duty parents participate in 1.5 hours of parent education each month of the school year. As part of our monthly general meetings, expert speakers present topics relevant to parenting preschoolers. This year's presentations have covered issues such as communication, discipline, nutrition and first-aid. These education sessions support parents in further developing their parenting skills and further enhance relationships between families.
Parent Education Session and General Meetings are scheduled for the first Tuesday of each month, starting at 7:00 PM. Typically they run around 2 hours in length.
We require children to toilet-trained before entering preschool. Should a child still require "pull-ups" for occasional accidents, the teacher may permit this on a case-by-case basis.
